We had a small house fire two weeks ago...
Shane had come home for lunch one day and we decided on chilli fries. Sounds good, right? Well, what WOULD have been a great lunch break turned into a mini nightmare! I started the fries, everything was fine... Shane called me into the living room to check out his fantasy football team. My brother-in-law, Joe is on his "league" this year so he was showing me everyone's team names. Anyways, thats when it happened!! It just goes to show how QUICKLY something like this can happen. I wasn't gone for more then 2 minutes at the most and BAM! We could smell the smoke and we immedicately ran into the kitchen and there IT was.
MY STOVE TOP COMPLETELY IN FLAMES!! :(
Being that I've never had to deal with a house fire before... I went into freak out mode. Stupid, right? I know! But in my defense, I was SCARED out of my mind. Shane grabbed my NEW kitchen towel and started swatting the flames as he called 911. He told me to grab the baking soda... panicking I told him we were out. So I grabbed the flour instead and threw it all over the fire.
IT WORKED!!
Oh. My. Gosh... talk about INSTANT relief!
The dispatcher then told us to go outside until the fire fighters arrived. Not even a minute later they showed up. They went inside, made sure the fire was completely out, took a look around and gave us the OK. The Fire Chief told us we did a GREAT job putting the fire out. He even jokingly told Shane to ditch the Coast Guard and come work for them. ;) Daniella was so amuzed by all the people who showed up. You would have seriously thought it was a huge house fire. We had 2 fire trucks, 1 ambulance, the Fire Chief's truck, an investigators car, and 2 military police cars in front of our house. It was insane but we are so thankful that the military police and fire department are on top of their game!
Thank God we are all okay, the house is okay, and the damage was minimal. It COULD have been far worse and we are SO lucky and incredibly BLESSED.
... and if have a small house fire wasn't strange enough...
this is the library book Makayla brought home from school THAT same afternoon.
Weird, huh?
Our Stove Today...
The nobs are discolored :(
The wall behind the stove is still black... for now! The maintenance guy from housing is going to come back and paint it for us.
New burners and drip pans! :)
I think we learned a valuable lesson that day and since then we have both been so much more cautious about EVERYTHING. I have also bought a box of baking soda and keep it on the counter EVERYTIME I use oil for anything, just in case.
